Orthomolecular Medicine:
treating disease with nutrients
The term 'orthomolecular' was introduced in 1968 by Nobel laureate Linus Pauling. Ortho is Greek for 'correct' or 'right.' Orthomolecular means the 'right molecule.' Orthomolecular Medicine is the practice of preventing and treating disease by providing the body with optimal amounts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to create biochemical balance. Genetic factors affect not only the physical characteristics of individuals, but also their biochemical milieu. There is significant genetic variability in the biochemical pathways of the body. Diseases such as depression, schizophrenia, cancer, or atherosclerosis are associated with specific biochemical abnormalities which are causal or contributing factors.
Treatment should be individualized and always under the supervision of a health practitioner - an MD or an ND or a nutritionist or health consultant who has studied orthomolecular nutrition. Supplements are frequently used in mega dose amounts to achieve a "cure." What is appropriate for one individual may not be enough for someone else, or may be excessive for yet another. Many nutrients have a 'see-saw' relationship. If you take excessive amounts of one nutrient as a supplement, you may depress another equally important nutrient.
Vitamins are safe - even in mega dose amounts
Why do we need supplements when we eat all the right foods?
Caution: Similar to over-fertilizing a plant, consuming excessive amounts of supplements may put an additional burden on the body as it works to eliminate the excess.
Check your supplements. Are they natural or are they synthetic? Do they contain potentially toxic additives like fillers, binders, disintegrants, lubricants, flavoring agents, coloring agents, coating materials and preservatives?
Both the Society for Orthomolecular Medicine and the International Schizophrenia Foundation (see link at www.orthomed.org ) hold regular Toronto public information sessions about Orthomolecular Medicine and Mental Health. ISOM deals with physical health. ISF deals with mental health. Subscribe to the email event list: centre@orthomed.org

Vitamin D Zoltan Rona MD, Vitamin D Council, D*Action, SUNARC, Alan aGaby MDZoltan Rona, MD, MSc. has been practicing preventative and complementary
medicine for over 30 years. He is the author of numerous books including
the Alive Books series and the editor of the Encyclopedia of Natural
Healing. Early on in his practice he realized that virtually nothing
in conventional medicine ever treats the cause of the health problem and
the patient continues to have the same problems over and over again. He
started recommending diet changes and natural remedies and found that the
results for patients were superior. There was no going back to just drugs
and surgery. You can read dozens of articles under the HEALTH LINKS section
of his website. His articles on Swine flu hype and hysteria, and flu shot
alternatives are a must. In his most recent book, Vitamin D: The Sunshine
Vitamin (Alive Books), Dr. Rona explains that the deficiency of this
essential vitamin is one of the root causes of a number of dangerous chronic
conditions including depression, cancer, heart disease, and osteoarthritis. "Vitamin D's influence on key biological functions vital to one's health
and well-being mandates that vitamin D no longer be ignored by the health
care industry. Technically not a 'vitamin,' vitamin D is in a class by itself.
Its metabolic product, calcitriol, is actually a secosteroid hormone that
targets over 2000 genes (about 10% of the human genome) in the human body.
Current research has implicated vitamin D deficiency as a major factor in
the pathology of at least 17 varieties of cancer as well as heart disease,
stroke, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, depression, chronic
pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, muscle wasting, birth
defects, periodontal disease, and more." D*Action is a consortium of scientists, institutions and individuals committed
to solving the world-wide vitamin D deficiency epidemic. Learn about the
diagnosis and treatment of Vitamin D deficiency, find out about seminars,
and find out how you can get in on the action. William Grant PhD has a doctorate in physics and a 30-year career in atmospheric
sciences. He turned to epidemiological studies in 1996 and in 2000 he recognized
that solar ultraviolet-B affected the risk of many types of cancer. He is
currently investigating the role of vitamin D in reducing the risk of various
types of disease. SUNARC is the Sunlight, Nutrition And Health Research
Center. In an article for Integrative Healthcare Insider Alan Gaby MD asks if the exuberance for Vitamin D is irrational. |

writes: "...modern medicine has lost track of its root dictum to do
no harm. Instead of being about health and healing it is about death, disease
and the poisoning of the human race. Too many doctors today practice pharmaceutical
terrorism, not medicine." Revolutions in healing and miracles of health
are possible when we combine what is most new in medicine and psychology

Energy MedicineThe term 'Energy Medicine' appears to have been in use since the founding
of the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy
Medicine (ISSSEEM) in 1989. "ISSSEEM is dedicated to exploring
and applying subtle energies as they relate to the experience of consciousness,
healing, and human potential. ISSSEEM is in a unique position, acting both
as a bridge builder between communities and a leader in the field, offering
a community with a widespread appreciation of the energetic component within aa
many disciplines including quantum physics, therapeutic modalities, healing,
psychology, consciousness, psi and the understanding of our multidimensional
existence." |
Energy PsychologyEnergy Psychology has been called ''acupressure for the emotions."
By tapping on energy points on the surface of the skin while focusing the
mind on specific psychological problems or goals, the brain's electrochemistry
can be shifted to quickly help overcome fear, guilt, shame, jealousy, anger
or anxiety; to change unwanted habits and behaviors; to enhance the ability
to love, succeed, and enjoy life. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) has been described by it's developer, Gary Craig, as "an emotional version of acupuncture...without needles." EFT practitioner Nadine DeSanto Ed.S. writes: "EFT is a drug-free, self-help technique that can relieve anything from minor stress and upset, to panic attacks, debilitating grief, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, migraine headaches, as well as many other emotional and physical pains. Even decades-old issues can be resolved, sometimes very quickly! Sounds too good to be true? You've got nothing to lose, and much to gain by learning EFT!" www.EFTuniverse.com |

Placebos and nocebosTo start, here's my favorite article about placebos, the power of suggestion and the power of your own mind. From the New Scientist magazine: The Science of Voodoo: When Mind Attacks Body. COMMENT: Re: "It's Catching" - 'mass psychogenic illness' ....'no medical explanation .... 'no environmental toxin' ...'no problem was found with the vaccine' Here's my personal experience with 'mass psychogenic illness'. There were 20 of us feeling very lousy working in an office in an award-winning building. No medical nor environmental explanation was found, so we were told we had chronic fatigue syndrome which, 'as everyone knows' is psychological. We struggled on, until the day two workmen became unconscious in the crawl space underneath my desk, and directly above the garage. We all had long-term low-level carbon monoxide poisoning. We did not have mass psychogenic illness. There are real problems with vaccinations - see the section on Vaccinations. There are real problems with pharmaceuticals. If pharmaceuticals had no adverse and lethal effects, we wouldn't have the number of drug recalls that we do. We wouldn't have books like Dr. Peter Breggin's Your Drug May Be Your Problem, Dr. Hyla Cass' Supplement Your Prescription, pharmacist Suzy Cohen's Drug Muggers, Dr. Jay S. Cohen's Over Dose; and Dr. David Healy would not have launched his website www.RxISK.org if there were no problems. It would be irresponsible of doctors not to advise patients of side/adverse effects - these are not placebo/nocebo effects. CBS 60 Minutes (Feb 2012) aired: Treating Depression: Is there a placebo effect? 17 million Amercians, including children, are currently taking antidepressants. That brings in $11.3 billion to the pharmaceutical industry. CBS correspondent Lesley Stahl interviewed Harvard scientist Irving Kirsch who said: "The difference between the effect of a placebo and the effect of an antidepressant is minimal for most people." " People get better when they take the drug. But its' not the chemical ingredients of the drug that are maing them better. It's largely the placebo effect." Here's the segment and here's the transcript. Great show. But. Some people will want to come off antidepressants immediately, and others will be blamed for taking them. Doctors tell people they need pharmaceuticals because they have a 'biochemical imbalance.' The biochemical imbalance, in fact, starts when the first pill is swallowed. The brain tries to adjust itself to accommodate the drugs, the adverse effects, the interdose interval withdrawal effects, etc. Withdrawal can be dangerous. Here's Dr. Peter Breggin's 10% withdrawal method from his book Your Drug May Be Your Problem. Chapter 8. Read the Depression and Mood Disorders section of this site again. Stress depletes nutrients. Pharmaceuticals deplete nutrients. Nutrient depletion can be the cause of anxiety and depression. The 'placebo effect' will help you only for so long. The 'voodoo' of the medical doctors/deities who pronounce 'you have two to three days to live' will be dealt with in the Bioethics section. |
Snails and Bears and the Tree of LifeHerding Snails Herding Snails (2011) was written by Carolyn Dean MD ND for the followers of her Future Health Now! program. I've used an excerpt: "When I take my morning walk I always encounter huge snails on the golf cart path. They head off across the six-foot wide track oblivious to the fact that the workers in their carts and then the golfers will take direct aim at them just to her the satisfying crunch of their beautiful brown striped shells. Being the caring individual that I am, I often pick up these amazing creatures and put them back on the grass only to come back later to find them on the cart path crushed and oozing. I do the same thing with my patients, clients and blog readers, I try to put people on the right track with lots of common sense wellness advice. I can't help thinking that snails on the cart track is an analogy to the people who want a quick fix to their problems. It's much easier to glide along with modern medicine doctors telling you what drugs to take. Instead, I encourage people to take a different path embracing lifestyle and wellness solutions. As I wind up my two years of producing Future Health Now! I wonder what impact I'm having. The people who are in the program really do love it and comment on how it's changed their lives. But how do I encourage people to do the program when they are so used to quick-fix drugs? How do I convince people that staying healthy is the best way to stay off drugs and keep out of hospitals? The answer I've come to is that it's not my job to convince anyone of anything. I loved every minute of the thousands of hours it took to create the program and that's good enough for me." The Bear That Wasn't The Bear That Wasn't (1946) is a classic children's book by Frank Tashin. What I Don't Know, isn't Knowledge In 1880 several undergraduates at Balloil College, Oxford published a set of quatrains making light of themselves and their superiors. The most widely quoted of these is about Benjamin Jowett, master of Balloil. First come I. My name is J-W-TT The Guest House This being human is a guest house. Welcome and entertain them all! About Maie Liiv
My book Shattered Rainbow: A story of psychic attack, spiritual emergency and medical malfeasance is still 'under construction.' It's primarily a book about consciousness. It's a book about those who can do what is considered impossible because they can 'see' what is considered invisible. It's also a book about medical malfeasance and will be dedicated to those who have had their lives destroyed or terminated by misdiagnosis, pharmacy and polypharmacy.
